NPM: Hope is…

Today’s letter is H, and because H is for hope and also for hawk, I’m going to mix things up a bit. Today I’m using Natalie Babbitt’s “Delicious is…” format, defining hope using an acrostic about my neighborhood hawk.

Hope is…

Hawk, sitting still as a statue
Atop an old snag
Waiting, watching, her
Keen eyes peeled for her next meal.

(I had decided to write this as an acrostic before reading Anastasia Suen’s clever tutorial, but was glad to be reminded of the importance of story.)

  1. I love knowing that you have a neighborhood hawk, too! Ours sits on the power lines that run beside the railroad tracks. There’s good hunting in the (mostly) unmowed weeds below the wires.

  2. Catherine, great poem and photo! I especially love your last line “Keen eyes peeled for her next meal.” with your long e internal rhyme. We also have a neighborhood hawk, who thankfully hasn’t returned, yet since the chipmunks haven’t come up from their winter slumber, yet. Though, with the rising temperatures there will be a chipmunk party soon.
