Congratulations, Heidi Mordhorst! You are the lucky winner of a copy of In the Middle of the Night: Poems From a Wide-Awake House! I know you and your second-graders will LOVE Laura’s new book.
There is a lot going on at my house these days. Our renovation project is winding down and we’re hosting an engagement party for my son and his fiancee next weekend. I know we all have busy lives, and kudos to all of you who juggle everything so well, but my attention has NOT been on my writing. I have managed to jot down a few ideas and make some notes, but not much more than that. I am looking forward to writing more in April, but have no particular project in mind for National Poetry Month.
Last week, it was my turn to post a prompt for Laura’s Food Poetry Project. Deciding what to favorite food to post was more difficult that I thought it would be. In the end, I went with the my idea of the delicious breakfast food ever, the pancake.
Writing about pancakes turned out to be just as difficult as choosing them. Sometimes when I’m stuck, I write acrostics to get ideas flowing. This week, after a bit of tinkering, I decided to stick with the form.
Pancake
Piping hot,
Awash in butter
Nine in a syrup-
Covered stack
Abounding with blueberries
Keeps hunger away and
Energizes me for the day!

Hopefully a stack or two of pancakes will power you through the next week or two! Until you wrote it, I didn’t realize that I sometimes do the same thing with acrostics. They help get the words flowing, don’t they? I’m glad you stuck with the form, as your poem stacks up like a beautiful stack of pancakes! Love the “awash in butter”! Good luck with all the fun!

That’s awesome news about your son and his engagement. I want to hear more about that! Sometimes with writing, choices are more paralyzing than helpful. It’s an interesting to think about with students.

Love the poem–nothing better than piping hot pancakes. Makes me hungry for some right now! I haven’t written a poem yet during this challenge. You have given me an idea for tomorrow!

Your pancake prompt was fun, Catherine, and I love the poem, especially ‘nine in a stack’. Somehow that clicks with me, imagining that sweet and yummy tower!

Yumm!!!!! I hardly ever eat pancakes, but I love them! And actually went out to breakfast and enjoyed a stack this week. Your anacrostic makes me want to go out again!

Only thing better than pancakes are waffles! I love that you chose a form that wound up being perfect for your content — a stack of lines, like a stack of pancakes! SWEET!

I love how you use acrostic to get the ideas flowing. I use haiku. These little warm-ups are sometimes works of art on their own, like your pancake. I think pancake was one of the prompts I just couldn’t get to this month because as Heidi Mordhorst says, You know… LIFE. I’ll get back to it. I do love the “awash in butter” My younger body ate a lot of butter!

Oh nooooo….I’m temporarily on this prescribed diet to manage my blood sugar, and I have been missing pancakes like you wouldn’t believe! I tried making these healthy “protein pancakes” I found online, but let’s be honest, nothing quite compares to a fluffy stack of real pancakes, dripping and drowning in syrup and butter!

Congratulations, Catherine, on the engagement. I am glad that your renovation project is coming to a close so that you can enjoy your home. It should be beautiful and I hope you share photos with us. Maybe an acrostic poem will follow also. Your pancake poem was yummy.

Well, thanks! That’s funny because as you probably saw I just awarded a copy of ITMOTN to one of my readers! Pancakes are a rare treat in our house, so I enjoyed being served them here…and I like how the acrostic stacks up like the pancakes do.
