Slice of Life: A Poem for Pi Day

This pie bird is another small object from my kitchen. (I wrote more about these objects here.) He’s been baked into more apple pies than I could ever count. He seemed like a worthy subject of a poem this Pi day.

The Pie Bird

No squawks or caws
from this blackbird,
nestled in a puddle
of fruit and spice.
But the swirls of steam
escaping the “o”
of his yellow mouth
send out the signal
loud and clear:

Pie is ready!
Deliciousness awaits!

  1. “nestled in a puddle
    of fruit and spice”

I think I will be muttering these lovely lines all day!
I’ve never seen a pie bird either, but suddenly I think I must have one. What a delight of a poem – Pie poem for pi day!

  2. Love this – so creative. I always wanted one of those — but I don’t make enough pies to warrant one. Maybe a future goal… I love the word – Deliciousness. It has layers of meaning.

  3. Pie bird. That is a new one for me. Love your description. Couldn’t help but think of “four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie…”

  4. You chose a fun twist on “Pi” day. Never heard of a pie bird, but I suppose I’d have to bake pie to be “in the know.” “No squawks or caws from this blackbird,” but a clever play on “pi” for the day!

  5. I’ve heard of pie birds but don’t know if I’d ever seen one before. I love the poem and that fruit and spice puddle is wonderfully appealing. Yum!
