This pie bird is another small object from my kitchen. (I wrote more about these objects here.) He’s been baked into more apple pies than I could ever count. He seemed like a worthy subject of a poem this Pi day.
The Pie Bird
No squawks or caws
from this blackbird,
nestled in a puddle
of fruit and spice.
But the swirls of steam
escaping the “o”
of his yellow mouth
send out the signal
loud and clear:
Pie is ready!
Deliciousness awaits!

I used to bake pies all the time when I was young and living in California, but I never saw a pie bird! I love it…it’s so simple and so sweet.

I think I will be muttering these lovely lines all day!
I’ve never seen a pie bird either, but suddenly I think I must have one. What a delight of a poem – Pie poem for pi day!

Love this – so creative. I always wanted one of those — but I don’t make enough pies to warrant one. Maybe a future goal… I love the word – Deliciousness. It has layers of meaning.

Not the Pi I expected. I love your poem and whimsy-ness of your words. Your poem is calling me to back a pie.

You chose a fun twist on “Pi” day. Never heard of a pie bird, but I suppose I’d have to bake pie to be “in the know.” “No squawks or caws from this blackbird,” but a clever play on “pi” for the day!
