Although National Poetry Month has officially ended, poetry continues, always waiting for us to pay close attention and find it. For those of us still honing our craft, Ron Koertge has this advice.
“Do You Have Any Advice For Those of Us Just Starting Out?”
by Ron Koertge
Give up sitting dutifully at your desk. Leave
your house or apartment. Go out into the world.
It’s all right to carry a notebook but a cheap
one is best, with pages the color of weak tea
and on the front a kitten or a space ship.

I completely agree with step one. I start every poem that way.

It’s wonderful, Catherine. I love Poetry 180-so accessible to my middle school students (and to me!). Thank you!

Now that’s valuable advice. I have a thing for notebooks, must be the inner poet in me struggling to breathe. 🙂

Great advice to keep up a playful spirit of poetry. Looking for that notebook with a spaceship!

Perfect advice. I feel lost when I don’t have my notebook close at hand, no matter where I am (at home or otherwise)!

Great advice wrapped up in a wonderful poem! I do have my share of cheap notebooks– many of which have been salvaged from my own childrens’ kitten and spaceship days. 🙂
