Poetry Friday: “…With Care in Such a World”

As I searched for an idea for today’s post, I came across this poem by William Stafford:

“The Well Rising”

The well rising without sound,
the spring on a hillside,
the plowshare brimming through deep ground
everywhere in the field–

The sharp swallows in their swerve
flaring and hesitating
hunting for the final curve
coming closer and closer–

Read the rest of the poem here.

The final line, “with care in such a world,” resonated with me, and I decided to use it as the strike line for a Golden Shovel.

  1. I said goodbye to summer today in my poem, Catherine, but I adore fall. Before I read your poem, I had already chosen that Stafford line, makes me want everyone to read it. And your “spectacular technicolor fall day” (I know I rearranged) is fabulous.

  2. I love how poets can inspire more poetry and this golden shovel is such a nice image. One of these days I’ll be able to travel to the northeast to see the colors change.

  3. I’m so glad you shared the William Stafford poem, Catherine. Since interviewing Naomi Shihab Nye, I’ve been inspired to read more of his work. And then your golden shovel in response! What a joyful surprise from that seed of a line. I only wish Florida falls were that spectacular.

  4. Simply stunning, Catherine. And so very wise. What is it about the magic of a golden shovel poem…absolutely enchanting. One day I, too, will try one. Happy spectacular fall, friend. xx
