As a literacy specialist, I wear my love of reading on my sleeve for all to see. Or on my door. Donalyn Miller shared her idea for a Reading Life door several years ago, and I’ve been creating them ever since.

Until now. Over the summer, I moved into a new room. My old door was perfectly placed for third, fourth, and fifth graders to see everyday. Kids often stopped to study the book covers or ask me about a title.
Now I have three roommates, so the door isn’t just mine. Also, it faces a wall, so it could only be seen if the door was closed, which it never is.
I’m sure there is another way to create a Reading Life display, but I haven’t figured it out yet. (I’m still unpacking all my books!) In the meantime, here’s a virtual door I created in Canva.
What would be on your Reading Life display?
Thank you to Stacey, Dana, Betsy, Beth, Kathleen, Deb, Melanie, and Lisa for creating this community and providing this space for teachers and others to share their stories each Tuesday. Be sure to visit Two Writing Teachers to read more Slice of Life posts.
I know it doesn’t feel the same, but I think your virtual door works!

So hard when you have to stop doing something like that — I am sure you will find a way though! (Poster in the hall? Shared bulletin board?) And in the meantime, your virtual door is awesome – and I think I want to make one! 🙂

Love the virtual door idea with Canva. Great concept. And I think kids would love doing this. Great mentor text.

I’ve set up a padlet but my kids are not going to it. Maybe Canva would be a better idea for them to share their reading lives. But there’s something about having that real thing, the door. I’m sure you’ll figure something out. A bulletin board, maybe, that rotates to other teachers to share their reading lives, perhaps?

Your virtual door is just lovely for now. Maybe you will create a digital doorway to reading for your learners each month and they will do the same.

Hmmm, I like this idea of a reading door. I’m a classroom teacher but I’d like to share what I read with my students so I’m thinking of creating a bulletin board in our classroom where we share what we read. I love this idea.

I love the virtual door. I use padlet and goodreads for my high schoolers.
