Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Georgia Heard are two of my poetry idols. I have shared their poetry with my students since I began teaching. More recently, I’ve been fortunate to learn from them at workshops and conferences. One silver lining to everything being moved online this year is that I was able to be part of “The Craft and Heart of Poetry,” their amazing Highlights workshop.
This draft is the result of a quickwrite Georgia and Rebecca shared during the workshop. It isn’t perfect, but I had fun writing it. Thank you, Rebecca and Georgia, for your never-ending inspiration!
Halloween Frighting
Ghosts ghouling
Zombies drooling
Vampires slurping
Mummies lurching
Ogres crunching
Trolls munching
Witches hocusing
Goblins pocusing
Skeletons rattling
Demons battling
Werewolves chomping
Frankensteins stomping
Orange moon lighting
Halloween frighting

Happy Halloween weekend, Catherine! I smile with these clever rhymed lines , especially what your pen drafted in quick stitch ~ with “hocusing” and “pocusing.” It’s new to me as I was not in your group for that fast word wizardry. My first camp with this creative duo and I hope good spells fall, to attend again.

I was sorry I couldn’t do Georgia & Rebecca’s workshop this fall, Catherine, just too much going on this time. I’ve loved writing with them & with you in the past! Your poem fills me up with wonderful spooky words for a Halloween fest! Happy “slurping” and “lurching”! What a grand scary picture you’ve made!

I love all the great verbs. I can just hear kids reading this one aloud and potentially acting it out ! I’m so glad you were able to participate in the workshop and created some goodies to share.

I’m envious of your time with Rebecca and Georgia. Such wonderful people as well as poet teachers. My favorite couplet is “Witches hocusing
Goblins pocusing” Clever word choice.

Oh, a Highlights workshop sounds like just the luxury I wish I could have right now. I’m so glad you got to go. And, look at this fun, wonderful list poem that came from it I love it! And, gosh, I could really use this with teaching parts of speech. Happy Halloween, Catherine.
